DAILY ART BLOG

黃卓盈 Wong, Tsoek-Jing went by her middle name of Charlene all though her school years, even if she didn’t particularly like the name. Achiru is the result of “Charlene” put through a Japanese name transliteration with some letter rearrangement and reduction to resemble a nice-sounding name that some Japanese website said meant friendship. It works because Achiru always wanted more friends and she was heavily influenced by Japanese anime and manga art from the 1990s. She tells people it’s her artist name.

Achiru knows how suffocating it feels to hide your self expression so she is embarking on a journey to be creatively expressed in a sustainable way. She overcame several years of chronic fatigue and depression to make the world a safer and more respectful place for gender creative people.

Since Achiru was the first born Canadian child of two Chinese immigrants from Hong Kong, she has developed a unique blend of East-meets-West in her mannerisms, philosophy and artistic practice. She currently resides in her hometown of cow-loving Calgary and wants nothing to do with cows except enjoy Alberta beef. The irony of this is compounded by the Punjabi shops and lovely Pakistani population in her Northeast district. Maybe that’s why she has so many brown elfin characters.

Because fantasy and science fiction is almost entirely devoid of queer representation, Achiru employs a metaphysical cast “family” of actors to put on comic productions where no topic of discussion is banned or shamed at the dinner table.

Achiru has completed two bachelor’s degrees that reflect her interest in Anthropology and Education, from UBC and UofC respectively. She has been brainwashed to love multiculturalism and spends most of her time working on webcomics and graphic novels as a hermit when not teaching art and story to students.
